Indiana Medicaid Eligibility, Untangled

← All resources  ·  6 min read · For Indiana families

Medicaid paperwork has a talent for making smart, capable parents feel lost. Let's turn the alphabet soup back into something you can actually read.

You are not alone

“Priya read the eligibility letter four times and still couldn't tell if the answer was yes or no. She wasn't confused because she wasn't trying, she was confused because the letter was written for a filing cabinet, not a mother.”

The big idea

Indiana Medicaid helps cover health and care costs for people who qualify, including many children with disabilities or complex medical needs. For families pursuing Structured Family Caregiving, Medicaid is the doorway: your Young Hero generally needs to be enrolled in Indiana Medicaid and approved for an HCBS waiver before caregiving support begins.

Two things get checked

The words that trip everyone up

HCBS means “Home- and Community-Based Services”, care delivered at home instead of in a facility. A waiver is simply Indiana “waiving” the usual rule that certain services only happen in an institution, so your child can receive them at home. That's it. No trap door.

Eligibility isn't a test of how good a parent you are. It's a checklist, and checklists can be worked through, one box at a time.

If you get a “no”

A denial is not always the end of the road. Sometimes it's a missing document, a wrong box, or the wrong waiver. This is exactly where having a Care Navigator™ in your corner matters, someone who has read a hundred of these letters and knows what the next move is.

This is general information, not benefits or legal advice. Final eligibility is determined by the State of Indiana. For official details you can also reach the Indiana Division of Aging at 888-673-0002.
